Chapter Twelve

On the drive toward Hanging Rock, Sam peered through the windshield at thickening smoke and a cloud of dust kicked up by the heavy-duty tires on Wade’s motorcycle. He’d insisted on riding alone while she stayed in the SUV—a precaution that made sense if he needed to disappear quickly. He was supposed to be dead, after all. And she agreed that they needed to choose the right moment for him to emerge from the shadows. Following that logic, he’d chosen a route that went the long way around to avoid well-traveled roads where he might be seen.

She’d be glad when this charade was over. They needed to find evidence that would nail these smugglers and make Wade’s testimony irrelevant. More than that, they needed to figure out who was running the show—the ringleader.

While driving, she handled sheriff-type business. Her first call was to Deputy Schmidt, who was never going to forgive her for getting into a shoot-out yesterday and not calling him in to help. He promised to keep people away from the fire zone and take care of the 911 calls, most of which were related to traffic and vehicles.

Next, she spoke to the fire marshal. Hobbs assured her that the blaze was 90 percent contained but there were still hot spots that might flare up. He expected to have firefighters on active duty in Swain County for several more days.

Sam took a couple of deep breaths to calm herself before contacting Pansy Gardener, the main 911 operator/dispatcher. Pansy was as perceptive as a fortune-teller. Keeping a secret from her wouldn’t be easy. That sweet, rosy-cheeked little woman with the fluffy bangs and the silver bun on top of her head would guess from the tone of Sam’s voice that something had changed.

During the past year, Pansy had become expert in reading Sam’s moods and had often sent her home with instructions to take a long bath and unclench her muscles. Sage advice, and Sam was grateful for it. If she hadn’t listened to Pansy, she might have tensed into a frozen statue and then—blam!—shattered into a million pieces.

Last night when Sam picked up Jenny, Pansy had been suspicious, and that was before she’d really connected with Wade. All she’d done at that time was kiss him and cuff him. Now that she’d made love with her “formerly dead but not a zombie” husband, the change in her was obvious. She could feel the glow that radiated from the inside out. Her whole being was energized and bubbling with vitality. She had her passion back.

Before hitting the dispatch button on her console, Sam rubbed the corners of her mouth to erase the smile that Wade’s fine loving had put there.

“Hey, Pansy, it’s me.”

“You sound funny. Do you have a cold?”

“It’s the smoke,” Sam said with a fake cough. “I’ll be available today, but I might be out of touch. Most of my time will be spent with the FBI, looking into the murder of Drew Morrissey.”

“I can hardly believe it,” she said.
